Sahara desert hike tour itinerary
Day 1: M’Hamid – Sidi Naji
After breakfast at our camp, the camel guides will come to pick you up and make the preparations. You decide whether you want to hike or ride: the camels’ tranquil, rocking gait will take you into the desert, where you can experience it with all your senses. We cross the dry Wadi Draa a beautiful landscape, hike through small dunes and resilient tamarisk trees that withstand the harsh desert conditions where we occasionally meet nomads grazing their livestock. We will prepare lunch in the shade of the tamarisk trees, and after the worst of the heat has subsided, we will continue on to an area with slightly larger dunes, where we will set up camp for the night. We light the cooking fire and prepare the meal, and we eat under the vast starry sky. You sleep in the tent that we pitch for you or, if you prefer, under the starry sky.
Day 2: Sidi Naji – Erg Ezzahar
From early morning, the desert hiking tour continues, the landscape gradually changes today as we cross the large plain before Erg Ezzahar. Between the dunes, we repeatedly encounter traces of ancient civilizations that once lived here, as well as remnants of nomads who have pitched their tents in this area for centuries. On the reg, we find old pottery shards, beads, and small bronze objects. In the evening, we reach Morocco’s highest dune, Erg Ezzahar (Howling dune), which, according to legend, has a treasure buried beneath it. You can climb the high dunes and watch the incomparable sunset from there. Tea ceremony at sunset on the dune and a good dinner under the stars. The night is enchanting, the emotion is intense. Night under the tent or sleeping under the stars of Sahara desert, you will sit around the campfire under the endless starry sky and listen to the music of the nomads.
Day 3: Erg Ezzahar – Erg Hassi Bourbra
Your desert trekking tour (Méharée) continues its expedition through the Moroccan Sahara. This morning we set out and hike north towards the Bou Rabrar well. Again, we traverse dunes, cross the reg, pass sparse vegetation, and reach Wadi Draa, where grazing camels may be spotted. The deep well provides water for the nomads’ animals, and our camels also enjoy this opportunity to drink. For us humans, it is also a relief to find ample water for washing after three days in the desert. Near the well, we spend our final night in the open desert before beginning the return journey. Picnic for lunch. Setting up the camp for the night and preparing dinner by your team.
Day 4: Hassi bourbra – Iguidi Camp
After breakfast your hiking sahara desert tour takes the road back to M’Hamid, midday Oasis with lunch and then back to the camp. From Bou Rabrar, it’s about four hours back to Mhamid. The area shows slightly more vegetation, and with some luck, we may encounter nomads tending their animals and setting up tents. midday Oasis with lunch and then back to the camp. With a well-earned shower! Dinner and overnight at the Iguidi Camp.
You have the chance to rest after the long trek. Upon request, we can arrange a visit to the Mhamid Hamam, where you can wash away the desert’s hardships.
